Aglaonema 'Snowflake'

Dense pale speckling across green leaves gives Aglaonema 'Snowflake' its crisp, spotted pattern. Cream, silver and white flecks sit across smooth oval-lance blades, while the green base keeps each leaf clearly outlined.

The plant starts as a small central crown and slowly builds into a fuller clump. Young plants need careful watering, steady warmth and a snug pot while the roots fill the container.

Foliage details

  • Growth habit: Compact clumping crown with short stems and regular new leaves.
  • Leaf pattern: Green blades with dense pale speckling and cream-silver marbling.
  • Leaf shape: Oval to lance-shaped leaves with smooth surfaces and defined margins.
  • Small-pot behaviour: Young plants prefer careful watering and gradual pot increases.

Compact growth and origin

Aglaonema 'Snowflake' produces bright speckled foliage from a small central crown. Leaves sit closer together when the plant gets filtered light, warm roots and a pot that does not stay wet at the base.

The genus Aglaonema is native from north-eastern India to Papua New Guinea and grows in warm, shaded tropical habitats. The dense pale flecking across the green leaves gives this cultivar its snow-speckled look.

Aglaonema 'Snowflake' care essentials

  • Light: Give bright indirect light so new leaves stay shorter and the crown does not open up loosely.
  • Watering: Water when the upper 2–4 cm of substrate feels dry. Small pots can dry at the edge while staying damp below.
  • Substrate: Use a fine airy aroid mix with perlite, pumice or fine bark for root oxygen.
  • Drainage: Use a pot with drainage holes and empty decorative covers after watering.
  • Temperature: Keep above 18 °C. Warm roots help young crowns restart after shipping and push new leaves without translucent cold marks.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity reduces stuck or marked new leaves; dry heated air may crisp pale leaf edges.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. Young plants need gentle nutrition in a small root area.
  • Repotting: Repot once roots have filled the current pot, moving up gradually.
  • Pruning: Remove ageing leaves cleanly at the base and trim older stems above a node if the crown opens.
  • Propagation: Divide rooted side shoots or root stem cuttings in warm, humid conditions.

Growth and leaf cues

  • Open, loose crown: Increase filtered light gradually and rotate the pot so new leaves do not all lean to one side.
  • Yellow soft leaves: Check for wet substrate, cool roots or a pot holding too much moisture.
  • Brown pale patches: Move the plant away from direct sun or intense heat through glass.
  • Slow post-shipping growth: Keep the plant warm and lightly moist until new roots grip the mix and new leaves start moving again.

Pet and child safety

Aglaonema 'Snowflake' contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Eaten plant tissue can cause oral irritation and digestive discomfort, so place the pot where pets and small children cannot reach the leaves. Clean tools and hands after pruning.

Excellent, succinct, intro to Marxism...
Format: Paperback
Richard Wolff’s Understanding Marxism is an excellent and highly accessible populist work that introduces Marx’s critique of the inherent contradictions and inevitable problems that plague – and will continue to plague – capitalism. So, he sets out to show how the contemporary experience and understanding of the relationship between employer-employee emerge from because it is the modern manifestation of the historical distinction, which is hierarchical, oppressive and ultimately “exploitative, between master-slave and Lord-serf - Zizek, in his small text The Relevance of the Communist Manifesto, offers a unique response to this line of critique and reasoning. Above I mention the accessibility of the writing – in fact, there is a crystalline clarity to it - and if you have watched Wolff’s show or listened to his interviews, it’s as if Wolff is speaking in his usual manner that avoids academic jargon and communicates his ideas directly. This is an extremely helpful and useful guide to understanding Marx, and I am hoping many young intelligent politically-minded university students will read it – e.g., those who might be unfamiliar with Marx - because it offers a sensible corrective to the ill-informed Marxist critics on the so-called “intellectual dark web” (IDW) who repeatedly, without properly understanding Marx, scapegoat him and employ him as a bogeyman to enhance the arousal of fear and alarm with their rhetoric. Ultimately, and here I agree with Wolff, Marx might be said – bound intimately with Marx’s notion of “species being” (a term Wolff avoids) – to show why “ending exploitation [is] necessary to actualize social commitments to liberty, equality, brotherhood, and democracy” (36-37). So, instead of a utopian (end-of-history) communist or socialist model for society, Wolff, through his reading of Marx, offers what might be termed a philosophical or even commonsensical (and achievable!) model of what a more socially aware and humanly grounded workplace might look like – one that is Marxist in nature and instantiates people coming together in more “democratic, egalitarian ways.” (71). Wolff also directs readers to primary source material for further study - so, all the quotations included are traced to Marx's original writings, which readers are encouraged to seek out. To conclude, readers must be aware that this pamphlet – indeed, this is what Wolff calls it – does not attempt to serve as a broad or sprawling introduction to Marx and his writings. Thus, when ordering it, be aware that it is not akin to academic introductions and critiques of Marx such as Peter Singer’s Marx: a Very Short Introduction (OUP) or Allen Wood’s Karl Marx (Routledge).

Wolff is a one of the best people I know of to deliver a quick handbook to Marx. He delivers a master class on this complicated subject and I have long respected his views on economics and politics.

Awesome Introduction. A quick, easy read.
Format: Paperback
Very good overview and a quick little read! I was able to read this in a day, despite having ADHD. That, in my opinion, is a testament to the engaging, straight-forward writing style. I now feel well-versed enough in thd basics to read more in-depth texts. Highly recommended.

Brief and informative
I recommend this book to anyone that is curious about what exactly Marxism or socialism is but does not care to read volumes of material from Karl Marx himself. It's a quick yet poignant look at the major points and positions of the philosopher Karl Marx and gives you reason to go further study of you desire. This book will leave the average person with enough knowledge to hold an intelligent conversation about what Marxism is. Can be read on a commute to and from work or a 2hr plane ride.
